A Creative Person's Guide to Marketing and Promoting
In these competitive times publishers and producers, particularly smaller concerns want to know "What will you do to promote your work?"
The creative soul has to turn it's attention to the business of promotion and marketing. Proposals now need to include such details as what contacts you have with purchasers, where and how you prsonally will sell your product.
We don't purport ourselves to be marketing giants, however we have both worked and studied in various stages of the marketing game. The helpful hints and tips we give here is not a set of hard and fast rules but rather a jump start to you creating and developing youtr own ideas.

Writing your promotion and marketing Proposal
When considering your marketing and promotion proposal for your next book we would suggest that you do not bypass the marketing tools that have been developed overseas as increasingly Australia is succumbing to the marketing strategies developed in other countries.
If you haven't had experience in sales and marketing writing such a proposal can be daunting to say the least. You could consider doing a short course in the basics of marketing to get some basic skills to build on however there is a lot of information available on the Internet about marketing your book.
Targetting the market for your book will increase sales and make both you and your publisher happy! If you are self published that makes you doubly happy!
We would suggest a well rounded marketing mix and multi-level strategy that involves several marketing techniques. Some techniques that work are:
a) discount when both books are bought together
b) organise a launch day, invite your friends, family, local newspapers, P&C organisations in your area. Cocktail evenings are common within the arts community.
c) on your website invite comment for feedback of the first book and use this information to promote both books.
d) write an article about your books and submit to various newspapers, reviewers, authors and editors.
e) advertise in messageboards not for writers, a childrens book could be advertised in a mothers or fathers group. a book on handicrafts could be advertised on messageboards for craft groups.
f) Take copies of your book to writers groups for sale, do some readings from your books while you're there.
g) Enter your other works in competitions to become more renowned.
h) leave leaflets about your book in cafes, libraries and bookshops for customers to peruse. Make the leaflets clear concise and purchasing information easy to follow.
i) Find the people in Australia who will read your book. Where do they gather? Check out the Bereau of Statistics for details on their buying habits!
Visitors who know of other strategies please step up and let us know!
Have fun and keep on creating
